About

Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) primarily used for the treatment of major depressive disorder. Beyond its antidepressant effects, it is also widely prescribed for the management of chronic neuropathic pain, including conditions like diabetic neuropathy and postherpetic neuralgia, and for the prophylaxis of migraine headaches. It works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and norepinephrine, in the brain, which helps to regulate mood and pain perception. Its sedative properties can also be beneficial for patients experiencing insomnia associated with their condition. Due to its anticholinergic and sedative side effects, it is often initiated at a low dose and gradually titrated.
