About

Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant that selectively inhibits Factor Xa, a crucial enzyme in the coagulation cascade responsible for initiating and propagating blood clot formation. By blocking Factor Xa, apixaban effectively reduces thrombin generation and subsequent fibrin clot development. The 2.5mg dosage is specifically indicated for certain patient populations and clinical scenarios, such as the prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) in patients undergoing elective hip or knee replacement surgery. It is also used for stroke prevention in a subset of patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation who meet specific criteria, including advanced age, low body weight, or impaired renal function, where a lower dose is deemed appropriate. This precise dosing allows for tailored anticoagulation, offering a predictable and effective antithrombotic effect without the need for routine coagulation monitoring, thereby enhancing patient convenience and safety in specific high-risk settings.

Uses

  • Prophylaxis of DVT in patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.
  • Prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in specific non-valvular atrial fibrillation patients.
  • Prevention of recurrent DVT and PE after initial treatment.
  • Management of certain thrombotic conditions under specialist guidance.
