About

Albendazole is a broad-spectrum anthelmintic agent belonging to the benzimidazole class, primarily used to treat various parasitic worm infections. Its mechanism of action involves selectively binding to beta-tubulin in parasitic worms, which inhibits microtubule polymerization. This disruption impairs glucose uptake and depletes glycogen stores, ultimately leading to the immobilization and death of the parasite. This makes it highly effective against a wide range of intestinal and systemic helminthic infections, including roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, and certain tapeworms. The drug's efficacy is largely attributed to its active metabolite, albendazole sulfoxide, which has a longer half-life and improved bioavailability. It is commonly prescribed for single-dose or short-course treatments, with the specific regimen depending on the type and severity of the helminthic infestation, aiming to eradicate the parasites and alleviate associated symptoms.
