About

Bempedoic acid, often found under brand names like BEMPESTA, is an oral medication used to lower low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in adults with hypercholesterolemia or established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) who require additional LDL-C lowering. It works by inhibiting adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase (ACL), an enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis in the liver, upstream of HMG-CoA reductase (the target of statins). This mechanism reduces cholesterol production and increases the uptake of LDL-C from the blood.

Bempedoic acid is particularly useful for patients who cannot tolerate statins due to muscle-related side effects or those who need further LDL-C reduction despite maximal statin therapy. It is often prescribed in combination with statins or other lipid-lowering therapies. Clinical trials have demonstrated its efficacy in significantly reducing LDL-C levels and improving cardiovascular outcomes. Regular monitoring of lipid profiles and liver function is recommended during treatment to ensure safety and effectiveness.

Uses

  • Lowers LDL-C in primary hypercholesterolemia.
  • Reduces cardiovascular risk in ASCVD patients.
