About

Bilastine 20mg is a novel, non-sedating, second-generation H1-antihistamine primarily used for the symptomatic treatment of allergic rhinoconjunctivitis and urticaria. It acts as a highly selective peripheral H1-receptor antagonist, effectively blocking the action of histamine, a key mediator in allergic reactions. Bilastine has a rapid onset of action and a long duration, allowing for once-daily dosing. It does not undergo significant hepatic metabolism and is largely excreted unchanged, which minimizes drug-drug interactions. Its low potential for central nervous system penetration contributes to its non-sedating profile, making it suitable for daily use.

Uses

  • Symptomatic treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis.
  • Relief from perennial allergic rhinitis symptoms.
  • Management of chronic spontaneous urticaria (hives).
  • Alleviation of associated symptoms like itching and rash.

  • Pregnancy - Use during pregnancy is generally not recommended unless clearly necessary and the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Consult a doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - It is unknown if bilastine is excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or discontinue the drug, considering the importance of the drug to the mother.
  • Liver - No dose adjustment is required in patients with hepatic impairment, as bilastine is minimally metabolized by the liver.
  • Kidney - No dose adjustment is required in patients with mild to moderate renal impairment. Use with caution in severe renal impairment.
  • Lung - Generally safe for use in patients with lung conditions, but always consult a physician if you have pre-existing respiratory issues like asthma.
