About

Bonitar 100mg Tablet contains Ibandronic acid, a potent nitrogen-containing bisphosphonate primarily used in the management of osteoporosis and hypercalcemia of malignancy. Ibandronic acid works by selectively binding to the mineral matrix of bone, particularly at sites of active bone resorption. Once incorporated into the bone, it is taken up by osteoclasts, the cells responsible for breaking down bone tissue. Inside the osteoclasts, ibandronic acid inhibits farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase, an enzyme critical for the synthesis of isoprenoid lipids essential for osteoclast function and survival.

This inhibition leads to a disruption of the osteoclast cytoskeleton and induces osteoclast apoptosis, thereby reducing bone resorption without directly affecting bone formation. The net effect is an increase in bone mineral density and a reduction in the risk of fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women with osteoporosis. It also helps to normalize elevated calcium levels in patients with cancer-related hypercalcemia.

  • Pregnancy - Not recommended during pregnancy due to potential adverse effects on fetal bone development. Use only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus.
  • Breastfeeding - It is unknown if ibandronic acid is excreted in human milk. Breastfeeding is generally not recommended due to potential risks to the infant.
  • Liver - No dose adjustment is typically required in patients with hepatic impairment, as ibandronic acid is not metabolized in the liver.
  • Kidney - Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance < 30 mL/min) as accumulation may occur. Not recommended in severe cases.
  • Lung - Generally, no specific precautions are needed for patients with lung conditions. However, ensure adequate hydration, especially if there's a risk of dehydration.
