About

Cefuroxime is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis. It achieves this by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) located on the bacterial cell membrane, which are essential for the synthesis of peptidoglycan, a crucial component of the bacterial cell wall. This interference leads to the disruption of the cell wall, ultimately causing bacterial cell lysis and death. Cefuroxime is active against a broad spectrum of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including many strains resistant to first-generation cephalosporins. Its efficacy makes it a valuable treatment option for various bacterial infections, including those affecting the respiratory tract, urinary tract, skin and soft tissues, and ear, nose, and throat, providing a reliable solution for common community-acquired infections.

Uses

  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia).
  • Management of urinary tract infections (UTIs).
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Management of ear, nose, and throat infections (e.g., otitis media, sinusitis).
