About
Etanercept, known as ETANERREL, is a dimeric fusion protein that acts as a competitive inhibitor of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha). It consists of the extracellular ligand-binding portion of the human 75-kilodalton (p75) TNF receptor linked to the Fc portion of human IgG1. By binding to TNF-alpha, etanercept prevents its interaction with cell surface TNF receptors, thereby reducing TNF-alpha-mediated inflammation. This mechanism helps to alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of various autoimmune and inflammatory diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis, as well as plaque psoriasis.
Classified as a biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), ETANERREL is administered via subcutaneous injection, often in a pre-filled syringe (PFS) for convenience. Its targeted action on TNF-alpha makes it an effective treatment option for conditions characterized by excessive TNF-alpha activity, offering significant clinical benefits in terms of pain reduction, improved physical function, and disease remission, ultimately enhancing patient quality of life.
