About

Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain agent, structurally related to the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), although it does not directly bind to GABA receptors. Its therapeutic effects are primarily mediated by its high-affinity binding to the alpha-2-delta subunit of voltage-gated calcium channels in the central nervous system. This interaction modulates the influx of calcium into presynaptic neurons, which in turn reduces the release of several excitatory neurotransmitters. By dampening this excessive neuronal activity, Gabapentin effectively reduces the transmission of pain signals and stabilizes neuronal excitability. It is widely prescribed for the management of various forms of neuropathic pain, such as post-herpetic neuralgia (nerve pain following shingles) and diabetic neuropathy, where nerve damage leads to chronic discomfort, burning, tingling, or numbness. Additionally, it serves as an effective adjunctive therapy for partial-onset seizures in adults and children.
