About
IMODIUM CAP contains loperamide, an opioid-receptor agonist that acts directly on the gut wall to slow down intestinal motility. By binding to opioid receptors in the intestinal wall, it reduces the release of acetylcholine and prostaglandins, thereby decreasing propulsive peristalsis and increasing the transit time of intestinal contents. This action allows for greater absorption of water and electrolytes from the gut, leading to firmer stools and a reduction in the frequency of bowel movements.
Loperamide also increases the tone of the anal sphincter, which helps to reduce urgency and incontinence. It is primarily used for symptomatic relief of acute and chronic diarrhea. Unlike central nervous system-acting opioids, loperamide does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier at therapeutic doses, minimizing central opioid effects and the risk of addiction. Its peripheral action makes it an effective and safe option for managing various forms of diarrhea.
