About

Finerenone is a non-steroidal mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) antagonist indicated for reducing the risk of sustained eGFR decline, end-stage kidney disease, cardiovascular death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and hospitalization for heart failure. It is specifically prescribed for adult patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) associated with type 2 diabetes (T2D). Finerenone works by selectively blocking overactivated MRs, which are known to contribute to inflammation and fibrosis in the kidneys and heart, key drivers of CKD progression and cardiovascular complications in T2D.

Unlike traditional steroidal MR antagonists, finerenone exhibits a more selective binding profile and does not significantly cross the blood-brain barrier, potentially leading to a reduced incidence of steroid-related side effects. Its targeted action helps to mitigate the progression of kidney damage and cardiovascular complications by addressing the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms driven by MR overactivation. This makes finerenone a crucial therapeutic option, offering a new approach to protect both kidney and heart health beyond conventional treatments and improving long-term outcomes for this high-risk patient population.
