About

LOOZ 200ML is a laxative medication containing Lactulose, a synthetic disaccharide that is not absorbed in the small intestine. Instead, it passes into the large intestine where it is broken down by colonic bacteria into low molecular weight organic acids, primarily lactic acid and acetic acid. This process leads to an increase in osmotic pressure within the colon, drawing water into the bowel lumen. The increased water content softens the stool and increases its bulk, stimulating peristalsis and promoting bowel movements.

Lactulose is primarily used for the treatment of chronic constipation and hepatic encephalopathy. In constipation, it helps to normalize bowel function without causing dependency. For hepatic encephalopathy, it works by reducing the absorption of ammonia from the gut. The acidic environment created by lactulose converts ammonia (NH3) into ammonium ions (NH4+), which are then trapped in the colon and excreted in the feces, thereby lowering blood ammonia levels and improving neurological symptoms. Its gentle action makes it suitable for long-term use under medical supervision.
