About

Bendamustine is a unique alkylating agent with a distinct mechanism of action that combines the cytotoxic properties of alkylating agents with those of a purine analog. It exerts its antineoplastic effects by forming covalent bonds with DNA, leading to both single- and double-strand breaks. This extensive DNA damage triggers cell cycle arrest and programmed cell death (apoptosis) in malignant cells. Unlike conventional alkylating agents, bendamustine also induces a p53-independent stress response and mitotic catastrophe, contributing to its efficacy against certain hematologic malignancies, including those resistant to other chemotherapies. Administered intravenously, it is a crucial treatment option for various lymphomas and leukemias, offering a therapeutic advantage due to its dual mechanism and favorable safety profile compared to some older agents. Its lipophilic nature also facilitates cellular uptake.

Uses

  • Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL)
  • Indolent B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma
  • Multiple myeloma (off-label)
  • Hodgkin lymphoma (relapsed/refractory)

Directions For Use

Administered intravenously by a healthcare professional. Dosage and cycle length are determined by the specific indication, patient's body surface area, and hematologic status.
