About

Onglyza-5 MG contains saxagliptin, an advanced oral antidiabetic medication belonging to the class of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors. This medication works by enhancing the body's natural ability to control blood glucose levels by inhibiting the enzyme DPP-4. DPP-4 is responsible for the rapid inactivation of incretin hormones, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which are released from the gut in response to food. By preserving the active forms of these incretin hormones, saxagliptin increases insulin synthesis and release from pancreatic beta cells in a glucose-dependent manner, and simultaneously reduces glucagon secretion from pancreatic alpha cells. This dual action effectively lowers both fasting and post-meal blood glucose concentrations in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. It is typically used as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either as monotherapy when metformin is inappropriate or in combination with other antidiabetic agents to achieve optimal glycemic control.
