About
Olmesartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used primarily for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure). It works by selectively blocking the binding of angiotensin II to the AT1 receptor in various tissues, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal gland. Angiotensin II is a potent vasoconstrictor and a key component of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system (RAAS), which plays a crucial role in blood pressure regulation.
By blocking its effects, olmesartan causes vasodilation, reduces aldosterone secretion, and lowers blood pressure, thereby decreasing the risk of cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attack. It is often prescribed as a first-line agent or in combination with other antihypertensives to achieve optimal blood pressure control and improve patient outcomes.
