About
Famciclovir, an antiviral agent, is a prodrug of penciclovir, which is highly active against herpes simplex viruses (HSV-1 and HSV-2) and varicella-zoster virus (VZV). Upon oral administration, famciclovir is rapidly and extensively converted to its active metabolite, penciclovir. Penciclovir then selectively inhibits viral DNA polymerase, a crucial enzyme for viral replication, thereby preventing the synthesis of viral DNA and subsequent viral proliferation within infected cells. This targeted mechanism of action makes it highly effective in managing various herpes virus infections by significantly reducing viral shedding, accelerating lesion healing, and alleviating associated symptoms. It is particularly indicated for use in immunocompetent patients for the treatment of acute herpes zoster (shingles), recurrent genital herpes, and recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores), as well as for the long-term suppression of recurrent genital herpes episodes.
