About

Mycophenolate sodium is an immunosuppressive agent primarily used in combination with other medications, such as cyclosporine and corticosteroids, to prevent organ rejection in patients receiving kidney, heart, or liver transplants. It acts as a selective, non-competitive, and reversible inhibitor of inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), an enzyme crucial for the de novo synthesis of guanosine nucleotides. Lymphocytes, particularly B and T cells, are highly dependent on this pathway for proliferation, whereas other cell types can utilize salvage pathways. By inhibiting IMPDH, mycophenolate sodium effectively depletes guanosine nucleotides in lymphocytes, thereby suppressing their proliferation and differentiation, and ultimately inhibiting antibody formation and cell-mediated immune responses. This targeted action helps to prevent the immune system from attacking and rejecting the transplanted organ.
