About

Isotretinoin is a powerful oral retinoid, a synthetic derivative of vitamin A, indicated for the treatment of severe, recalcitrant nodular acne that has proven unresponsive to conventional therapies, including systemic antibiotics. Its multifaceted mechanism of action targets several key pathogenic factors of acne. Primarily, it dramatically reduces the size and activity of sebaceous glands, leading to a significant decrease in sebum production, which is a critical substrate for acne development. Furthermore, isotretinoin normalizes follicular keratinization, preventing the formation of comedones and microcomedones, and exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties. Due to its profound efficacy, it often leads to long-term remission for many patients. However, its use is strictly controlled due to a high risk of severe teratogenicity, requiring mandatory pregnancy prevention programs, and a range of other potential serious side effects, necessitating rigorous patient monitoring.
