About

Risdone 3 mg tablets contain Risperidone, an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and irritability associated with autistic disorder. Risperidone works by blocking dopamine D2 receptors and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors in the brain. This dual action helps to alleviate both positive symptoms (like hallucinations and delusions) and negative symptoms (like social withdrawal and lack of motivation) of schizophrenia. Its atypical profile also contributes to a lower incidence of certain extrapyramidal side effects compared to older antipsychotics. By restoring a more balanced neurotransmitter activity, Risperidone helps to improve thought processes, mood, and behavior, enabling patients to better manage their conditions and improve their overall quality of life.

Uses

  • Treatment of schizophrenia.
  • Treatment of manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar disorder.
  • Treatment of irritability associated with autistic disorder.
  • Short-term treatment of aggression in dementia (off-label, with caution).

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Avoid alcohol consumption as it can significantly increase CNS depression, leading to enhanced drowsiness, dizziness, and impaired motor skills.
  • Pregnancy - Risperidone should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Neonates exposed to antipsychotics during the third trimester are at risk for extrapyramidal and/or withdrawal symptoms. Consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - Risperidone is excreted into breast milk. Monitor the infant for sedation, feeding difficulties, and extrapyramidal symptoms. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.
  • Liver - Risperidone is metabolized in the liver. Dose adjustment may be necessary for patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment. Use with caution and monitor liver function.
  • Kidney - Risperidone and its active metabolite are primarily renally excreted. Dose adjustment is recommended for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <50 mL/min).
  • Lung - Risperidone can cause respiratory depression, especially when combined with other CNS depressants. Use with caution in patients with severe respiratory conditions or sleep apnea.
