About

Rifaximin is a non-systemic antibiotic primarily used to treat various gastrointestinal conditions. It works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, leading to a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity against gut bacteria. What makes rifaximin unique is its minimal absorption into the bloodstream, meaning it acts locally within the intestines, reducing the risk of systemic side effects.

It is particularly effective in targeting bacteria associated with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), traveler's diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of E. coli, and reducing the risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence in patients with severe liver disease. By modulating the gut microbiome and reducing ammonia-producing bacteria, rifaximin helps restore microbial balance and alleviate symptoms related to bacterial dysbiosis in the gut.
