About
Sucragard Syrup is a cytoprotective agent primarily used in the treatment of gastrointestinal ulcers. Its active ingredient, sucralfate, works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcerated mucosa. When sucralfate comes into contact with stomach acid, it polymerizes into a viscous, sticky gel that selectively binds to proteins in the ulcer crater, such as albumin and fibrin. This creates a physical barrier that shields the ulcer from further damage by acid, pepsin, and bile salts, allowing the ulcer to heal. Sucralfate also stimulates the production of prostaglandins, which enhance mucosal blood flow and bicarbonate secretion, further contributing to the healing process. Unlike antacids or H2 blockers, sucralfate does not neutralize or reduce stomach acid directly but rather provides a localized protective effect, making it an effective treatment for duodenal and gastric ulcers, as well as for preventing stress ulcers.
