About
Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), available as URSODOX 300 TAB., is a naturally occurring bile acid used in the treatment of various cholestatic liver diseases and for the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. Its primary mechanism of action involves altering the composition of bile, reducing the cholesterol saturation and promoting the dispersion of cholesterol into liquid crystalline and micellar phases, thereby facilitating the dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. In liver diseases like primary biliary cholangitis (PBC), UDCA replaces more toxic endogenous bile acids, protecting hepatocytes from damage and improving bile flow. It also exhibits immunomodulatory effects, reducing inflammation in the liver.
UDCA helps to improve liver function tests, reduce symptoms such as pruritus, and slow the progression of liver damage in chronic cholestatic conditions, enhancing the quality of life for affected patients.
