About

Voriconazole is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent used to treat serious and life-threatening fungal infections. It works by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450-dependent 14-alpha-demethylase, an enzyme essential for ergosterol biosynthesis in the fungal cell membrane. This disruption leads to the accumulation of methylated sterols and a depletion of ergosterol, impairing fungal cell membrane integrity and function, ultimately inhibiting fungal growth and replication.

Voriconazole is effective against a wide range of fungi, including Candida species (including fluconazole-resistant strains), Aspergillus species, and other rare molds. Its intravenous formulation is particularly useful for critically ill patients or those unable to take oral medication, providing a potent option for systemic antifungal therapy.

Uses

  • Esophageal candidiasis
  • Serious Candida infections (including C. krusei)
  • Scedosporiosis and fusariosis
