Xigduo XR 5/1000 is a combination medication containing dapagliflozin, a sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor, and metformin hydrochloride extended-release, a biguanide. Dapagliflozin works by increasing the excretion of glucose in the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels independently of insulin. Metformin primarily reduces glucose production by the liver, decreases glucose absorption from the intestine, and improves insulin sensitivity. This dual mechanism provides comprehensive glycemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
