About
Apixaban is a direct oral anticoagulant (DOAC) that selectively and reversibly inhibits Factor Xa, a key enzyme in the coagulation cascade. By inhibiting Factor Xa, apixaban prevents the formation of thrombin and subsequent clot formation. This mechanism of action provides effective anticoagulation without the need for routine coagulation monitoring, unlike traditional vitamin K antagonists. It is widely used for the prevention and treatment of various thromboembolic conditions.
Its therapeutic applications include preventing stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, treating deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), and preventing recurrent DVT and PE. Apixaban offers a predictable pharmacokinetic profile and a relatively low risk of major bleeding compared to some other anticoagulants, making it a valuable option in clinical practice.
