About

Amoxicillin and Clavulanic Acid is a potent combination antibiotic, comprising amoxicillin, a semi-synthetic penicillin, and clavulanic acid, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Amoxicillin functions by interfering with bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to osmotic lysis and bacterial death. Crucially, many bacteria produce beta-lactamase enzymes that inactivate amoxicillin. Clavulanic acid overcomes this resistance mechanism by irreversibly binding to and inhibiting these enzymes, thereby protecting amoxicillin from degradation. This synergistic action significantly broadens amoxicillin's spectrum of activity, making the combination effective against a wide array of bacterial infections, including those caused by beta-lactamase-producing strains that would otherwise be resistant to amoxicillin alone. It is widely used for various common bacterial infections.
