About

Bionesp 40 mcg contains an erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA), a biosimilar to darbepoetin alfa. This medication is a long-acting form of erythropoietin, a hormone naturally produced by the kidneys that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells. In patients with chronic kidney disease or certain cancers, the body may not produce enough erythropoietin, leading to anemia. Bionesp works by binding to erythropoietin receptors on erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, promoting their proliferation and differentiation into mature red blood cells.

The extended half-life of darbepoetin alfa allows for less frequent dosing compared to conventional epoetin alfa, offering greater convenience for patients. By increasing the red blood cell count and hemoglobin levels, Bionesp effectively alleviates symptoms of anemia such as fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath, and can reduce the need for red blood cell transfusions. It plays a vital role in improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from chronic anemia.

Uses

  • Treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease.
  • Treatment of anemia in cancer patients receiving myelosuppressive chemotherapy.
  • To reduce the need for red blood cell transfusions in certain surgical settings.
  • Management of anemia in patients with myelodysplastic syndromes.

Directions For Use

Administer by subcutaneous or intravenous injection as directed by your doctor. Do not shake the syringe. Ensure proper storage and preparation before use.

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - No direct interaction with alcohol, but excessive alcohol consumption can worsen anemia or liver conditions, which may impact treatment effectiveness.
  • Pregnancy - Use only if clearly needed and the potential benefit outweighs the potential risk to the fetus. Consult your doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - It is unknown if ESAs are excreted in human milk. Use with caution; the decision to breastfeed should consider the drug's importance to the mother.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment. Monitor liver function tests regularly.
  • Kidney - Frequently used in chronic kidney disease patients. Monitor hemoglobin levels closely to avoid exceeding target ranges, which can increase cardiovascular risks.
  • Lung - No specific contraindication. However, patients with pre-existing cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions should be monitored for potential complications related to increased blood viscosity.
