About

Brivaracetam is an antiepileptic drug (AED) used in the treatment of partial-onset seizures with or without secondary generalization in patients aged 4 years and older. It belongs to the racetam class of compounds and is structurally related to levetiracetam. Brivaracetam selectively binds with high affinity to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain, a mechanism believed to modulate neurotransmitter release and reduce neuronal excitability, thereby preventing seizure activity.

This medication is typically used as an add-on therapy for patients whose seizures are not adequately controlled by other antiepileptic drugs. Its rapid onset of action and generally favorable pharmacokinetic profile make it a valuable option in epilepsy management. Close monitoring by a neurologist is essential to optimize dosage and manage any potential side effects, ensuring effective seizure control.
