About
Carboplatin is a platinum-based antineoplastic agent widely used in chemotherapy. It functions by forming inter- and intra-strand DNA crosslinks, leading to inhibition of DNA synthesis, repair, and transcription, ultimately inducing apoptosis in rapidly dividing cancer cells. Its mechanism of action is similar to cisplatin but with a different toxicity profile, notably less nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity, but more myelosuppression. It is often administered intravenously as part of combination regimens for various solid tumors. The drug's cytotoxic effects are cell cycle non-specific, targeting both proliferating and non-proliferating cells. Its efficacy is attributed to its ability to disrupt the genetic material of cancer cells, preventing their uncontrolled growth and division.
Uses
- Ovarian cancer (advanced epithelial)
- Non-small cell lung cancer
- Small cell lung cancer
- Head and neck cancers

Safety Measures
- Alcohol - Avoid alcohol during treatment as it may exacerbate side effects like nausea or liver strain.
- Pregnancy - Contraindicated in pregnancy due to significant fetal harm risk; effective contraception is essential.
- Breastfeeding - Not recommended during breastfeeding as the drug may pass into breast milk and harm the infant.
- Liver - Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver impairment; dose adjustments may be necessary.
- Kidney - Dose adjustments are crucial for patients with renal dysfunction due to altered drug clearance.
- Lung - Rarely associated with interstitial lung disease; monitor for new or worsening respiratory symptoms.
