About

Caspofungin is an echinocandin antifungal agent primarily used to treat serious invasive fungal infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of β-(1,3)-D-glucan, an essential component of the fungal cell wall, leading to osmotic instability and cell death. This mechanism is unique among antifungals, making it effective against fungi resistant to other classes. Caspofungin is particularly active against Candida species, including those resistant to fluconazole, and Aspergillus species. It is administered intravenously and is often a preferred choice for empirical therapy in febrile neutropenic patients, as well as for esophageal candidiasis and invasive aspergillosis in patients intolerant or refractory to other treatments. Its favorable safety profile compared to some other systemic antifungals contributes to its utility.

Uses

  • Treatment of invasive candidiasis.
  • Empirical therapy for presumed fungal infections in febrile neutropenic patients.
  • Treatment of invasive aspergillosis in refractory or intolerant patients.
  • Management of esophageal candidiasis.

Directions For Use

Administer intravenously as a slow infusion over approximately one hour. Follow prescribed dosage and duration strictly.

Benefits

  • Effective against a broad range of Candida species.
  • Active against Aspergillus species.
  • Unique mechanism of action targeting fungal cell wall.
  • Generally well-tolerated with fewer drug interactions.
  • Useful for fluconazole-resistant Candida infections.
  • Can be used in patients intolerant to other antifungals.

  • Liver - Dosage adjustment may be required in patients with moderate hepatic impairment. Use with caution in severe impairment.
  • Kidney - No dosage adjustment is typically required for renal impairment, but monitor renal function.
  • Lung - Generally safe for lung conditions, but monitor for any signs of hypersensitivity reactions affecting respiration.
