About

Clarithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing translocation of peptide chains. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and some gram-negative bacteria, as well as atypical pathogens like Mycoplasma, Chlamydia, and Legionella. Its unique pharmacokinetic profile allows for twice-daily dosing in many indications, making it a versatile option.

This medication is particularly useful in treating respiratory tract infections, skin infections, and certain mycobacterial infections. It is also a key component in eradication regimens for Helicobacter pylori. Due to its broad spectrum and intracellular penetration, it is a valuable option for community-acquired pneumonia and other specific infections where susceptible organisms are identified.

Uses

  • Treatment of respiratory tract infections (e.g., bronchitis, pneumonia).
  • Eradication of Helicobacter pylori in peptic ulcer disease.
  • Management of skin and soft tissue infections.
  • Treatment of atypical mycobacterial infections.
