About

COLOZIA 500 MG TAB contains Colistin Sulfate, a polymyxin antibiotic primarily used for its potent bactericidal activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. It acts by disrupting the bacterial cell membrane. Colistin, being a cationic polypeptide, interacts with the anionic lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria, displacing essential divalent cations (calcium and magnesium). This disruption leads to increased permeability of the bacterial cell membrane, causing leakage of intracellular contents and ultimately cell death. It is particularly effective against challenging pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae, which are often resistant to other classes of antibiotics. Due to its potential for nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity, its use is generally reserved for severe infections where other less toxic antibiotics are ineffective or contraindicated, making it a crucial last-line agent in certain clinical scenarios.

Uses

  • Treatment of severe multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections.
  • Management of complicated urinary tract infections.
  • Therapy for respiratory tract infections (e.g., pneumonia).
  • Treatment of skin and soft tissue infections caused by susceptible organisms.

  • Breastfeeding - Excreted in breast milk; use with extreme caution. Monitor infant for potential adverse effects, including kidney issues or gastrointestinal upset.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment; monitor liver function closely, although primary excretion is renal.
  • Kidney - Contraindicated in severe renal impairment or requires significant dose adjustment and close monitoring due to high risk of nephrotoxicity.
  • Lung - Use with caution in patients with pre-existing lung conditions, especially if administered via inhalation, due to potential for bronchospasm.
