About

Enalapril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, a class of medications widely used in the management of hypertension and heart failure. It works by blocking the enzyme responsible for converting angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor. This action leads to vasodilation, reducing peripheral vascular resistance and consequently lowering blood pressure. Additionally, enalapril decreases aldosterone secretion, which helps reduce sodium and water retention.

In heart failure, enalapril improves cardiac output and reduces the workload on the heart by decreasing both preload and afterload. Its renoprotective effects also make it valuable in patients with diabetic nephropathy. The therapeutic benefits extend to improving survival and reducing hospitalizations in patients with symptomatic heart failure, making it a cornerstone therapy in cardiovascular medicine.

  • Treatment of essential hypertension.
  • Management of symptomatic heart failure.
  • Prevention of symptomatic heart failure in asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction.
  • Diabetic nephropathy management.
