About

Epofit 5000 IU Injection is a recombinant human erythropoietin-stimulating agent (ESA) indicated for the management of anemia across various clinical settings, most notably in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), including those on dialysis and pre-dialysis. It acts by mimicking the biological activity of endogenous erythropoietin, a glycoprotein hormone naturally produced by the kidneys, which is the primary regulator of erythropoiesis (red blood cell production). Epofit binds to specific erythropoietin receptors on the surface of erythroid progenitor cells in the bone marrow, stimulating their proliferation, differentiation, and maturation into functional red blood cells. This process effectively increases the red blood cell mass and hemoglobin concentration, thereby enhancing the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood. Consequently, it alleviates the debilitating symptoms of anemia such as severe fatigue, weakness, and dyspnea, and significantly reduces the requirement for red blood cell transfusions. Beyond CKD, it is also utilized in certain cancer patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy and in HIV-infected patients receiving zidovudine, aiming to improve their quality of life and functional status by correcting anemia.

Uses

  • Treatment of anemia due to chronic kidney disease.
  • Treatment of anemia in certain cancer patients receiving chemotherapy.
  • Reduction of allogeneic red blood cell transfusions in surgery.
  • Management of anemia in HIV-infected patients on zidovudine.
