About

Enoxaparin is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) widely employed for its potent anticoagulant properties in the prevention and treatment of various thromboembolic disorders. Its primary mechanism of action involves potentiating the inhibitory effect of antithrombin III on Factor Xa, and to a lesser extent, on Factor IIa (thrombin). This selective inhibition effectively disrupts the coagulation cascade, preventing the formation and propagation of blood clots without significantly altering global clotting parameters at prophylactic doses. Administered via subcutaneous injection, enoxaparin offers a predictable pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profile, which contributes to its widespread use. It is a cornerstone in the management of conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) prophylaxis in surgical and acutely ill medical patients, the treatment of established DVT and pulmonary embolism (PE), and in the prevention of ischemic complications associated with unstable angina and non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI).

Uses

  • Prophylaxis of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in surgical patients.
  • Treatment of DVT with or without pulmonary embolism.
  • Prevention of ischemic complications in unstable angina and NSTEMI.
  • Prophylaxis of DVT in medical patients with acute illness.

Directions For Use

Administer subcutaneously as directed by your healthcare provider. Do not inject intramuscularly.

  • Treatment of existing deep vein thrombosis.
  • Reduced risk of pulmonary embolism.
  • Predictable anticoagulant response.
  • Convenient subcutaneous administration.
  • Lower risk of heparin-induced thrombocytopenia compared to UFH.

  • Injection site pain or irritation
  • Thrombocytopenia (low platelet count)
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Allergic reactions (rash, urticaria)
  • Osteoporosis (with long-term use)
  • Spinal/epidural hematoma (rare but serious)

  • Pregnancy - Generally considered safe for use during pregnancy when clinically indicated, but close monitoring is required.
  • Breastfeeding - Enoxaparin is minimally excreted into breast milk and is considered compatible with breastfeeding.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with severe liver impairment due to increased bleeding risk.
  • Kidney - Dosage adjustment is necessary in patients with severe renal impairment (CrCl < 30 mL/min) to prevent accumulation.
  • Lung - Generally safe for use in patients with lung conditions, but caution is advised if there's a risk of pulmonary hemorrhage.
