About

Metronidazole, commonly known as Flagyl, is a synthetic nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent with potent activity against anaerobic bacteria and various protozoal parasites. Its mechanism involves intracellular reduction of its nitro group, forming reactive cytotoxic compounds that disrupt DNA synthesis and other vital cellular processes in susceptible microorganisms, ultimately leading to cell death. This makes it highly effective in treating a range of infections, including those caused by *Bacteroides*, *Clostridium*, *Helicobacter pylori*, and protozoa like *Entamoeba histolytica*, *Giardia lamblia*, and *Trichomonas vaginalis*. Metronidazole is a cornerstone in the management of anaerobic bacterial infections, amoebiasis, and trichomoniasis, often used in both therapeutic and prophylactic settings.
