About

Gifaxin 400mg contains Rifaximin, a non-systemic antibiotic that acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract. It is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that inhibits bacterial RNA synthesis by binding to the beta-subunit of bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase. Due to its poor systemic absorption, rifaximin remains largely within the gut lumen, where it exerts its antimicrobial effects with minimal impact on the systemic microbiome or host. This targeted action makes it particularly effective in treating conditions caused by an overgrowth of gut bacteria or specific enteric pathogens.

It is commonly used for traveler's diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and hepatic encephalopathy, where it reduces ammonia-producing bacteria in the gut. By reducing the bacterial load in the intestines, rifaximin helps to alleviate symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and bloating, while minimizing the risk of systemic side effects.

Uses

  • Treatment of traveler's diarrhea
  • Management of irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D)
  • Reduction of risk of overt hepatic encephalopathy recurrence
  • Treatment of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)
