About
Goserelin is a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) designed to potently inhibit pituitary gonadotropin secretion. Upon initial administration, it triggers a transient surge in luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which can lead to a temporary increase in sex hormone levels, known as a 'flare' effect. However, with continuous and sustained administration, goserelin induces desensitization and downregulation of GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland. This crucial process results in a profound and sustained suppression of LH and FSH release. Consequently, circulating levels of testosterone in men and estradiol in women are significantly reduced, making goserelin highly effective in the management of various hormone-sensitive cancers, such as prostate and breast cancer, as well as other gynecological conditions like endometriosis and uterine fibroids, by creating a medical castration state.
