About

Itragen 200 Tab, containing itraconazole, is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal agent used to treat various fungal infections. It works by inhibiting the fungal cytochrome P450-dependent enzyme lanosterol 14α-demethylase, which is essential for ergosterol synthesis. Ergosterol is a vital component of the fungal cell membrane, and its depletion leads to increased cell membrane permeability, leakage of cellular contents, and ultimately fungal cell death. This mechanism makes itraconazole effective against a wide range of dermatophytes, yeasts, and molds, including those causing systemic mycoses. Its lipophilic and keratinophilic properties allow it to concentrate in tissues like skin, nails, and vaginal mucosa, providing sustained therapeutic levels.

Itraconazole is particularly useful for infections that are resistant to other antifungals or for patients who cannot tolerate other treatments. It is available in various formulations, including capsules, oral solution, and intravenous solution, allowing for flexible dosing regimens depending on the type and severity of the fungal infection. Due to its complex pharmacokinetics and potential for drug interactions, careful patient selection and monitoring are crucial during treatment.

Uses

  • Treatment of superficial fungal infections (e.g., onychomycosis, tinea corporis).
  • Management of systemic fungal infections (e.g., histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, aspergillosis).
  • Treatment of oropharyngeal and esophageal candidiasis.
  • Prophylaxis of fungal infections in immunocompromised patients.
