About

Filgrastim is a recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) that plays a crucial role in regulating the production, maturation, and release of neutrophils from the bone marrow. It is primarily utilized in clinical settings to mitigate the risk and duration of severe neutropenia, a condition characterized by abnormally low levels of neutrophils, which are vital white blood cells for fighting infection. This medication is particularly indicated for patients undergoing myelosuppressive chemotherapy for non-myeloid malignancies, where a significant drop in neutrophil counts is anticipated. By stimulating the proliferation and differentiation of neutrophil precursors, filgrastim helps to rapidly restore neutrophil counts, thereby decreasing the incidence of febrile neutropenia and its associated life-threatening infectious complications. It also finds application in severe chronic neutropenia and for mobilizing peripheral blood progenitor cells for autologous or allogeneic transplantation.

Uses

  • Prevention of febrile neutropenia in chemotherapy patients.
  • Treatment of severe chronic neutropenia.
  • Mobilization of peripheral blood progenitor cells for transplantation.
  • Reduction of neutropenia duration in bone marrow transplant recipients.
