About

These medications are synthetic analogues of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), designed to modulate the endocrine system. Initially, they transiently stimulate GnRH receptors in the pituitary gland, leading to a brief surge in gonadotropin (LH and FSH) release. However, continuous administration subsequently desensitizes and downregulates these receptors, resulting in a profound and sustained suppression of LH and FSH secretion. This suppression ultimately leads to a significant reduction in the production of gonadal steroids, specifically testosterone in males and estrogen in females. This therapeutic effect is strategically employed in the management of various hormone-sensitive conditions, including advanced prostate cancer, endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and central precocious puberty, where the reduction of sex hormone levels is crucial for disease control and symptom alleviation.
