About

Met XL T25/40 is a fixed-dose combination medication indicated for the treatment of essential hypertension. It typically combines Metoprolol XL (a beta-blocker) at a dose of 25mg with Telmisartan (an angiotensin receptor blocker, ARB) at a dose of 40mg. Metoprolol XL works by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors, leading to a reduction in heart rate and cardiac output, thereby lowering blood pressure. Telmisartan acts by blocking the angiotensin II type 1 (AT1) receptors, preventing the vasoconstrictive and aldosterone-secreting effects of angiotensin II, which also results in blood pressure reduction. This synergistic action provides a comprehensive approach to blood pressure control, offering sustained efficacy and reducing the risk of cardiovascular complications in patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled by monotherapy.

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - Alcohol can potentiate the blood pressure-lowering effects of this medication, leading to increased dizziness or lightheadedness. Limit or avoid alcohol consumption.
  • Pregnancy - Use during pregnancy is strongly contraindicated, especially in the second and third trimesters, due to severe risks to the fetus. Discontinue immediately if pregnancy is detected.
  • Breastfeeding - Components of this medication may pass into breast milk. Use is generally not recommended; consult your doctor to discuss alternatives or risks.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with liver impairment. Dose adjustment may be necessary, and liver function should be closely monitored due to potential for altered drug metabolism.
  • Kidney - Use with extreme caution in patients with kidney impairment. Dose adjustment is often required, and renal function should be regularly monitored due to potential for worsening renal function.
  • Lung - Caution is advised in patients with asthma, COPD, or other obstructive lung diseases, as the beta-blocker component can exacerbate bronchospasm.
