About

Pegfilgrastim is a pegylated form of recombinant human granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF), a cytokine that plays a vital role in the production, maturation, and activation of neutrophils. Neutrophils are a type of white blood cell essential for the body's immune defense against bacterial and fungal infections. The pegylation process extends the drug's half-life, allowing for a single dose per chemotherapy cycle, which offers significant convenience compared to daily G-CSF formulations. Its primary therapeutic use is to reduce the incidence of febrile neutropenia, a serious and potentially life-threatening complication of myelosuppressive chemotherapy in patients with non-myeloid malignancies. By stimulating neutrophil recovery, pegfilgrastim helps to minimize the risk of infection, enabling patients to maintain their planned chemotherapy schedules and improve overall treatment outcomes.

Uses

  • Prevention of febrile neutropenia
  • Reduction of infection risk during chemotherapy
  • Support for myelosuppressive chemotherapy
  • Mobilization of hematopoietic stem cells (off-label)
