About
Sandostatin LAR 20mg Injection contains octreotide, a synthetic version of somatostatin—a natural hormone in the body that helps regulate the effects of other hormones, including growth hormone. This medication is primarily used to lower excess growth hormone levels in individuals with acromegaly, particularly when surgery, radiation, or alternative medications are not suitable.
Additionally, it is prescribed to manage symptoms like diarrhea and flushing caused by carcinoid tumors and VIP-omas (tumors in the pancreas that secrete certain substances). Sandostatin LAR is also used to prevent complications following pancreatic surgery, control and prevent re-bleeding from ruptured gastro-esophageal varices in people with chronic liver disease, and treat pituitary tumors that secrete excess thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), especially when surgery or radiotherapy isn't effective or suitable. It may also be used as a temporary treatment until radiotherapy becomes fully effective.
This medication should not be used if you are allergic to octreotide or any of its components. Inform your doctor if you have gallstones, liver conditions, blood sugar issues (high or low), or a vitamin B12 deficiency. Sandostatin LAR may reduce heart rate, and high doses can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, so your doctor may monitor your heart function throughout treatment. You should also notify your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before starting this medication.
