About
Mupirocin is a topical antibiotic used to treat bacterial skin infections, including impetigo and secondary infected traumatic skin lesions. It is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive bacteria, particularly Staphylococcus aureus (including MRSA) and Streptococcus pyogenes. Mupirocin works by reversibly binding to bacterial isoleucyl-tRNA synthetase, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis.
This unique mechanism of action minimizes the risk of cross-resistance with other antibiotics. It is often prescribed for localized skin infections to prevent the spread of bacteria and promote healing, and can also be used for nasal decolonization of MRSA carriers to reduce the risk of infection transmission in healthcare settings.
