About

Taxanes, such as Paclitaxel or Docetaxel, are a class of potent antineoplastic agents widely utilized in the treatment of various solid tumors. Their primary mechanism of action involves interfering with the normal function of microtubules, which are critical components of the cytoskeleton and essential for cell division. Taxanes bind to beta-tubulin subunits, promoting microtubule assembly and stabilizing them, thereby preventing their depolymerization. This stabilization leads to the formation of abnormally stable and non-functional microtubule bundles, disrupting the dynamic equilibrium required for cellular processes like mitosis. Consequently, cancer cells become arrested in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, leading to an inability to divide and ultimately inducing apoptosis. This cytotoxic effect makes taxanes highly effective against rapidly dividing cancer cells in various malignancies, including breast, ovarian, lung, and prostate cancers. They are often administered intravenously, either as monotherapy or in combination with other chemotherapeutic agents, depending on the specific cancer type and stage.
