About
Tamsulosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist primarily used to treat the signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common condition in older men characterized by an enlarged prostate gland. It works by selectively relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate gland and the bladder neck. This relaxation helps to reduce the obstruction of urine flow from the bladder, thereby improving various urinary symptoms. These symptoms include urinary hesitancy (difficulty starting urination), urgency, a weak or interrupted urinary stream, and the sensation of incomplete bladder emptying.
Tamsulosin does not shrink the prostate itself but effectively alleviates the obstructive symptoms, making urination more comfortable and efficient for men suffering from BPH. Its targeted action helps to restore a more normal urinary pattern.
