About

Dapagliflozin 5mg is an oral medication belonging to the sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor class, primarily used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by inhibiting the SGLT2 protein in the kidneys, which is responsible for reabsorbing glucose back into the bloodstream. By blocking this action, dapagliflozin causes the kidneys to excrete more glucose in the urine, thereby lowering blood glucose levels. This mechanism is independent of insulin secretion and sensitivity.

In addition to its glucose-lowering effects, dapagliflozin has demonstrated significant cardiovascular and renal benefits, including a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure, and slowing the progression of kidney disease. It is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise.
