About

Adalimumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody that specifically targets and neutralizes tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), a key pro-inflammatory cytokine implicated in the pathogenesis of several chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. By binding to both soluble and transmembrane forms of TNF-alpha, adalimumab prevents its interaction with cell surface receptors, thereby blocking the downstream inflammatory cascade. This action leads to a significant reduction in inflammation and immune-mediated tissue damage. As a biologic disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (bDMARD), it is widely prescribed for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and plaque psoriasis. Its targeted mechanism of action helps to alleviate symptoms, slow disease progression, and improve the quality of life for patients who have not responded adequately to conventional therapies.

Uses

  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Psoriatic arthritis
  • Ankylosing spondylitis
  • Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis

Directions For Use

Administer subcutaneously as directed by a healthcare professional, typically every other week. Ensure proper injection technique.

  • Significantly reduces inflammation and pain
  • Slows disease progression and joint damage
  • Improves physical function and quality of life
  • Effective in treating multiple autoimmune conditions
  • Can induce and maintain remission in IBD
  • Provides long-term disease control

Side Effects

  • Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Rash
  • Increased risk of serious infections (e.g., tuberculosis)
  • Development of antibodies to adalimumab
  • Allergic reactions
  • Demyelinating disorders (rare)
  • Heart failure exacerbation (rare)
  • Lupus-like syndrome (rare)

Safety Measures

  • Alcohol - No direct interaction with alcohol is known, but excessive alcohol consumption can worsen underlying liver conditions or increase the risk of certain infections, which should be avoided while on immunosuppressants.
  • Pregnancy - Adalimumab crosses the placenta, particularly in the third trimester. While data suggest low risk, use during pregnancy should be carefully considered. Live vaccines are not recommended for infants exposed in utero for several months after birth.
  • Breastfeeding - Adalimumab is present in breast milk at low levels. Due to its large molecular weight, absorption by the infant is expected to be minimal. Breastfeeding is generally considered compatible, but caution is advised.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with pre-existing liver disease. Although not primarily hepatotoxic, rare cases of liver injury have been reported. Monitor liver function tests periodically.
  • Kidney - No specific dose adjustment is required for patients with renal impairment, as adalimumab is primarily metabolized and eliminated by protein catabolism rather than renal excretion.
  • Lung - Patients should be screened for latent tuberculosis before starting treatment. Adalimumab can reactivate latent TB and increase the risk of other serious respiratory infections. Monitor for new or worsening respiratory symptoms.
