About

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker (CCB) primarily used to treat hypertension and angina pectoris. It works by relaxing the smooth muscle in the walls of blood vessels, leading to vasodilation and a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance. This action lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow to the heart, thereby reducing the workload on the heart and alleviating angina symptoms. Its long duration of action allows for once-daily dosing, contributing to patient compliance. Amlodipine exerts its antihypertensive effect by directly acting on vascular smooth muscle, causing peripheral arterial vasodilation and reducing total peripheral resistance. In angina, it increases myocardial oxygen delivery in patients with vasospastic angina and reduces myocardial oxygen demand by decreasing afterload in patients with chronic stable angina.

Uses

  • Treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure).
  • Management of chronic stable angina.
  • Treatment of vasospastic angina (Prinzmetal's angina).
  • Adjunctive therapy for coronary artery disease.

  • Pregnancy - Amlodipine should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus. Consult a doctor.
  • Breastfeeding - Amlodipine is excreted in human milk. A decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.
  • Liver - Use with caution in patients with impaired liver function, as amlodipine is extensively metabolized by the liver. Dosage adjustment may be necessary.
  • Kidney - Amlodipine can be used in patients with renal impairment at usual doses, as its pharmacokinetics are not significantly altered by kidney dysfunction.
  • Lung - Generally safe for use in patients with lung conditions, as it does not typically affect respiratory function.
